Have YOU got style?

Have you noticed how so many fashion rules have vanished?  With fewer rules it's sometimes hard to know how to dress.   On top of everything, we also know that our style speaks volumes about who we are, so it's worth taking the time to find out what our style is.  First impressions are important.  People do judge us, consciously or unconsciously, by the way we dress. I thought it would be fun to look at a few situations in life and give you some first steps on how to start finding a look that says, yes, THIS is me!

For the corporate woman:

Word on the street is that you don’t have to dress like a man to be powerful. No more power suits!  This is most excellent news. We want our own sense of self to shine through, because this is where our power is. One way to support this is to dress in very simple silhouettes and monochromatically – one colour.

Minimize the accessories so that you, not the bling, comes through. If most of the people in your office favour darker colours, go for light. You’ll stand out. And as long as you are clear about who you are and what your expertise is, you can carry this off effortlessly.  And what about heels? No stilettos, but anything from a classy flat to a sturdy stacked heel works well.

For the mum:

You are at that place where sweats and jeans have been a lifeline. You aren’t headed back to work, but you need to find your identify again. Who knew this phase could be so tricky! What to wear? Firstly, if you are still carrying baby weight, what ever you do, don’t try on things that are pre-baby. Trust me, it’s just not worth it.  If you have done this, you will know what I mean!

This is how you start –you start with a colour.  Not just any colour.  Remember the colour in your wardrobe that always gets you compliments? That's the one you start with.  Take it along with you when you shop and try to match it as closely as possible.  Since your family is still young and you will be running after them, choose styles that are practical and flattering. Clothes that wash easily and styles that move with you are a must.

Leggings and a good scarf, one for every season, go a long way!  And, of course, wearing the colour that gets you compliments will boost your self-esteem and put you on the path to discovering your personal style now that you are mum.

You have able room to express your individuality, to have the most edge, but make sure it’s coherent.

Less is still more and your boss will still be evaluating you on your appearance, even in a more artsy field.
